Carol WinklerCarol Winkler, Ph.D.is Associate Dean of Humanities and Professor of Communication Studies at Georgia State University.  Author of five books and more than thirty articles, her research program focuses on communication and violence, with foci in presidential terrorism rhetoric, radicalization discourse and imagery in online media environments, and youth studies of impoverished communities. Her work on urban debate as an intervention program in low income communities has been funded by the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhood Anti-Gang and Anti-Gun Initiatives, the Institute of Law and Justice’s Public Housing Safety Initiative Project, the Atlanta Housing Authority, and various private foundations. To facilitate replication of urban debate programs in public housing communities in cities throughout the United States, the Bureau of Justice Administration, in conjunction with the Institute of Law and Justice, included the program in its Youth Engagement in Violence Prevention Toolkit.  International program replication in various forms is being planned or is already under development in Sri Lanka, Korea, Iraq, and Columbia.

Dr. Winkler’s book, In the Name of Terrorism: Presidents on Political Violence in the Post-World War II Era (SUNY, 2006), won the National Communication Association’s outstanding book award in political communication, and her research on the relationship between visual images and ideology won that same organization’s top research award for visual communication. In 2012, she led a conference in partnership with the Army War College on Visual Propaganda in Online Radicalization, which resulted in a forthcoming volume, Visual Propaganda and Online Extremism, to be published by the Strategic Studies Institute later this year.  Dr. Winkler received her B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina @ Chapel Hill, her M.A. degree from Wake Forest University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland @ College Park.
